We have a couple of lists of
great words to get you started building your word "bank". We call them
"SAT/ACT words to know," but they're great words to add to your
repertoire, regardless of the reason. Get a notebook for
writing down these and other words as you learn them. Carry it with you in your
notebook or purse, and use it to keep your new words in one place. You can glance at
it when you're on hold waiting, or in a lull in a class, or whenever.
To learn new words, - really learn them - read them, say them, close your eyes and
try to remember the meanings. Read the sentences so you get a better sense of the
meaning. It also really helps to write them. Visit them again, and check
yourself a week later to see if you remember them.
We have some great ideas for increasing your ability with words and
building your word "bank" in our Newton's
Window Workbook: Raising Scores on the SAT, ACT, and PSAT without Prep Classes.
Available in Fall, 2006. To be notified when it is
available, and to get the pre-order and/or group price, simply send us your email address.

You can add to your word "bank" in so many ways. The best
way: Read. READ. READ. For more ideas, read our article
on increasing test ability through regular schoolwork.
