In
school, math is taught grade by grade, unit by unit. First graders learn with first
graders, and seventh graders learn with seventh graders. And only after lots and
lots and lots of years in math, do students get to the "big" stuff - things like
trigonometry and calculus. That's not how we do things at
Newton's Window. We believe that first graders can explore with fourth graders, and
twelfth graders can be as challenged by a simple number exploration as a second grader.
And we believe that parents and grandparents can join right in, regardless of what they
remember.
In the Newton's Window Weekly
Challenges, you might say that we're going to mix it up.
If you see math beyond the level of your child, don't worry, and don't leave! This
is designed to let them see the big stuff - and to look forward to getting there.
Just as we take a young music student to a concert, we can let young math students get a
glimpse of the breadth of what's coming.
So even if an excursion seems too hard (or too easy), try them -
parents, teachers, and kids. The answers are at the bottom of the following excursion. And
remember, even when we can't climb a mountain, it can still be a thing of beauty to
behold.....
