Cooking Classes
on an education web site?!

Yes.  After all, Newton ate too.

All of our classes - teach you how to cook 'local,' from the abundance of food around us.  You see where food comes from, and start to look at food possibilities in different ways.

We gather eggs from the hens; herbs, vegetables, and fruits from the garden, and augment that with what is in season locally to create delicious and healthful meals, baked good, and gifts from the kitchen.

We offer Weekend Workshops, Team-Building formats, Cooking Parties, Birthday Parties, Parent/Child Classes, Holiday and Theme Classes including our popular Halloween Class (see below), Customized Classes, and Summer Camp for kids.

Topics include:

  • Cooking Local: Finding and Using Great Ingredients Close to Home

  • Healthy Cooking From the Farm

  • How to make SUPERB home-made bread

  • Incredibly Delicious Low Fat Baking and Desserts

  • Gifts from the Kitchen

  • Preserving the Bounty

  • Delicious AND Healthy Holidays

  • Growing Food and Cooking It (when and where you never thought you could.)

All of the above classes are offered in adult or children's classes.  In addition, we offer some additional classes for kids:

HALLOWEEN!   - Spend a Saturday (or Sunday) with a "Halloween Day on the Farm."  Participants will enjoy an autumnal day on our small farm in Maryland.  They will gather eggs from the hens, autumn vegetables and herbs from the garden, explore a ghoulish and authentic compost pile with creepy, crawly inhabitants.  They'll feed the hens and watch their role in the cycle of food production on a farm.  They'll feed leaves to the garden and compost pile, and learn the splendors of decay!

We then head into the kitchen and create!  Pumpkin treats they never expected; a superbly delicious Halloween soup, a Halloween meal, and Halloween desserts.  Along the way they'll learn more about good cooking, and good eating.  They will take home recipes, and samples.

In November we offer a Fall/Thanksgiving Cooking Class, with foods that use fruits and vegetables from the autumn harvest.

In December we will have a Holiday Cooking Class, which includes seasonal foods with a healthy twist, holiday cookies, a hearty soup, wonderful gifts from the kitchen.  You will discover that wonderful holiday eating can be awfully healthy too.

In these and all classes, participants learn healthy eating, and healthy and safe cooking techniques, as well as smart shopping techniques. The classes are informal and fun, with room to ask questions, get creative - and learn a lot.

TEAM-BUILDING ACTIVITIES

BIRTHDAY PARTIES

Celebrate with the Hens!  Have a Cooking Party here on the farm.

We customize the party to the ages and size of your group, using any of the above themes and ideas, or any of your own.

A birthday party you will not forget!

In all of our classes, participants learn about the cycle of growth and decay in the garden - they will see a working compost pile, get to add to it, turn it, feel the heat of it - even in the cool fall or winter days. They will see the finished product: the rich black soil that results.

Participants get to walk through the gardens, to see the cycle of life in whatever season - and we grow throughout the fall and winter - how crops grow, how they go to seed, what good soil smells and feels like. They will see a zillion birds feeding at the feeders, and quite possibly a red-shouldered hawk perched in a tree, keenly interested in the chickens pecking (safely in their pen) down below.

Participants get to ask - and get answers to - all of their questions about where food comes from, how to prepare it simply and deliciously - and healthfully.  They will leave truly knowing more about cycle of life that results in a very fine meal - and filled with ideas for continuing all of this at home.

Location: Rockville, Maryland, (close to the Shady Grove Metro, and Lake Needwood)

Any class can be offered at your site, as well.
